The Phrygian bonnet is a symbol of freedom because of its resemblance to the bonnet worn by freed slaves in the Roman Empire, and its name means"liberty bonnet".
It is also the hat of the French Revolution, topped by Marianne, the allegorical figure of the Republic. The tricolor cockade is embroidered on this hat.
This is a small version of the Phrygian cap, without the long earmuffs.
