Having become famous in the 1900s after Edward VII's visit to Bad Homburg, Germany, it remained important in European fashion. It can be seen on many famous heads, notably British comedian Tony Hancock who used the hat as his signature.
Once used to recognize the elite, this headwear was adopted by several mafia bosses. In America, the film The Godfather gave it a new lease of life and greatly contributed to its success.
