Find the hat you need!

Whether you're a fan of classics or a fan of novelties, you'll always find a hat to suit your mood, winter or summer...

The hat in history - once a hat, always a hat...

In prehistoric times, people made do with a few leaves to cover their heads, but it was in ancient Egypt that the first hats appeared. Notably the bonnet, which differentiated freed slaves from those who were not. Hats were mostly worn by men, while women and children wore headdresses.

The beret is much older than you might think. Indeed, its name is thought to be of Gallic origin (birrus), but its shape has evolved over time. This woollen cap became a Béarn specialty, a national emblem, elegantly worn by civilians and soldiers alike. Caricatures attempting to diminish the appeal of this headgear have not succeeded in eliminating it from visual appeal. It remains a truly charming asset that goes wonderfully well with the vast majority of garments.

The chapka, a hat that comes to us from the polar cold of Russia (chapka means hat in Russian), is thought to have originated in Mongolia. It was imported to Siberia during the invasions of the Middle Ages. A symbol of power in Russia, a chapka is traditionally presented to rulers when they take power. Once made exclusively of natural fur, today they are also available in synthetic fur. This unisex hat has been very much in vogue since the early 2000s.

Felt hats were first worn by men in the 13th century. Women wore cotton or linen bonnets or headdresses. The toque gradually disappeared, replaced by the chaperon.

Straw hats

Straw hats were made from the 14th century onwards, and their shape varied from period to period. Generally adorned with a ribbon, its size and weave differentiate it according to its country of origin.

Initially used by farmers to protect themselves from the sun thanks to its wide brims, it became a highly prized accessory from the 19th century onwards. Well-to-do women wore garden hats, adorned with flowers, ribbons and other very personal accessories that gave an indication of their social status.

Men wore the famous boater hat favored by Fred Astaire and Maurice Chevalier. Among the most famous straw hats were the canotier, the panama and the capeline.

The boater hat

This summery straw hat took root in 1880. Such was its popularity that this hat, initially worn by male canoers and sportsmen, became popular with women hunting and horse-riding. Music-hall celebrities made it their accessory of choice. Even the great Coco Chanel succumbed to the canotier's charms. A star of the banks of the Seine and of guinguettes, it can be found on numerous canvases, the most famous of which is Auguste Renoir's “Le déjeuner des canotiers”.

The Panama hat

Originally from Ecuador, it was the workers in charge of building the Panama Canal who popularized it in Europe and the United States on their return from their missions. The real Panama hat smells of straw, and is easily recognized by its rosette-shaped mark on the top of the cap. It's a unisex hat.

The floppy hat

The quintessential woman's hat. In the 14th century, its wide brims protected peasant women from the sun. From the 19th century onwards, it was transformed into a variety of shapes and colors, earning it a place of choice among women. It came in a variety of materials: wool, felt, straw, fabric or sisal.

In the last century, the floppy hat became a celebrity favorite, making tabloid headlines in the 70s. The floppy hat is a timeless feminine accessory that adapts to all trends, seasons and occasions...

When the 19th century revolutionized hats...

It wasn't until the 19th century that hats became truly feminine. Confined to an exclusively practical role for women, it became a fashion accessory to enhance and embellish oneself, and to define one's social status. This was well understood by milliners and haute-couture designers, who adapted hats to the Garconne hairstyles of the 1920s.

The 19th century also saw the introduction of top hats, bowler hats, borsalinos, Steston (cowboy hats) and caps.

The top hat

Originating in the Netherlands, 15th-century bourgeois proudly sported this flat-brimmed, wide-brimmed headgear. Very fashionable in Europe, it was abandoned in the 17th and 18th centuries before reappearing during the French Revolution. It then became a unisex hat, with women wearing it high on their heads. Its heyday came in the 19th century. Made of beaver, silk or felt, nearly 7 million were sold every year in France alone, and as many in Europe. Today, this item is worn mainly for ceremonies and entertainment.

The Derby hat

Created in 1850 at the request of an English forester (James Coke), many celebrities such as Laurel and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin never parted with their bowler hat. Wearing a bowler hat in those days was the height of modernity.

The Borsalino hat

Giuseppe Borsalino trained at the prestigious Berteil millinery in Paris, where he earned the invaluable title of Master Hatter. With his qualification in hand, he returned to Italy, where he created the famous hat that would bear his name.

The Steston hat

Created by American John B. Stetson in 1860, this hatter 's son, who had contracted tuberculosis when he was just 30, decided to set off to discover the American West before the disease took him. It was during this trip that he decided to create this cowboy hat, first known as the “Boss of the Plains”. It quickly became the symbol of the Wild West.

The cap

In the early 19th century, the cap was representative of the working class. Quickly adopted by the armies of France, Europe and America, it was also worn by many tradesmen, including chauffeurs, porters, train conductors and security guards.

It's also becoming popular in the world of sport, and is used by soccer, baseball, golf and cycling teams, where it's usually worn backwards to protect the nape of the neck from the sun. Not forgetting, of course, the famous beret cap, better known as the “ Gavroche ‘ or ’ Poulbot ” cap, once worn by street urchins. Today, the cap is unisex and more fashionable than ever!

The hat after the 20th century...

The 20th century and its Roaring Twenties... It was at this time that the first cloche hats appeared, symbols of feminine elegance, perfectly suited to short cuts. They were the opposite of the classic women's hats of the time. This garçonne trend is typical of the 20s and the evolution of women's fashion.

The bob

The bob hat first appeared in the United States in 1924. Bob is short for Robert, the nickname given to American soldiers who wore this hat in France during WW2. Lately, urban fashion brands have totally revisited the bob to make it a very trendy hat.

The Brixton collection

A brand created in 2004 by a Californian trio imbued with a blend of music, surf and skate culture. Above all, they wanted to shake up codes with unique products, marked by a timeless style that combines classic and modern.

We offer a selection of hats suitable for all seasons and all weather conditions. The materials used are chosen according to temperature and weather conditions. For example, straw, linen and cotton are ideal for the spring-summer season, while felt and wool are more suited to winter. In January, protect yourself from the cold with a winter hat made of felt and wool. In April, add a touch of style to your outfit with a Stetson cowboy hat.

In summer, temperatures are warmer, so it's time to choose a lightweight, breathable summer hat like a straw hat. The cotton bob hat is also practical for vacations, as it can easily be stowed away in your suitcase. In September, go from a summer look to a more sophisticated one by wearing a fedora hat to accompany a classic black dress. Leather hats are also a good option for mid-season.

If you prefer caps and bonnets, we also offer them on our site. The cap can be worn in all seasons, while the bonnet is more suited to winter.
