Whether you're a fan of classics or eager to try something new, you'll always find a hat to match your current mood, winter or summer...

The hat in history - once a hat, always a hat...

While we were content with a few leaves to cover our heads in prehistoric times, it was in Egypt, in antiquity, that the first hats appeared. Notably the beanie, which differentiated freed slaves from those who were not. Hats were worn more by men, while women and children wore coiffes.

The beret is much older than one might think. Indeed, its name is thought to be of Gallic origin (birrus), but its form has evolved over time. The woollen toque became a speciality of Béarn, a national emblem elegantly worn by civilians and soldiers alike. Caricatures attempting to diminish the appeal of this headgear have not succeeded in eliminating it from visual appeal. It remains a truly charming asset that pairs wonderfully with a vast majority of garments.

The chapka, this hat that comes to us from the polar cold of Russia, (chapka means hat in Russian), is actually thought to have originated in Mongolia. It was imported to Siberia during the invasions of the Middle Ages. A symbol of power in Russia, a chapka is traditionally presented to rulers when they take power. Once made exclusively of natural fur, today they are also available in synthetic fur. This unisex hat has been very trendy since the early 2000s.

In the 13th century, the felt hat, essentially for men, made its appearance. Women, meanwhile, wore cotton or linen bonnets or headdresses. Toques will gradually disappear in favor of the chaperon.

Straw hats

The straw hat is made from the 14th century onwards, its shape varying according to the era. Generally adorned with a ribbon, its size and weave differentiate it according to its country of origin.

First used by farmers to protect themselves from the sun thanks to its wide brims, it became a highly prized accessory from the 19th century onwards. Well-to-do women wore garden hats, adorned with flowers, ribbons and other highly personal accessories giving indications of their social status.

Men wore garden hats to protect themselves from the sun, and the hat was also used to protect their heads from the sun.

Men wore the famous boater dear to Fred Astaire or Maurice Chevalier. Among the most renowned straw hats we'll find: the canotier, the panama and the chapeau capeline.

The canotier

Very summery, this straw hat took root in 1880. Such was its popularity that this hat, initially worn by male canoers or sportsmen, became popular among women hunting and riding. Music-hall celebrities made it their accessory of choice. Even the great Coco Chanel succumbed to the canotier's charms. A star of the banks of the Seine and of guinguettes, it will be found notably on numerous canvases including, the most illustrious: "Le déjeuner des canotiers" by Auguste Renoir.

The Panama Hat

Original to Ecuador, it was the workers in charge of building the Panama Canal who popularized it in Europe and the USA as soon as they returned from their missions. The real panama smells of straw, and is easily recognizable thanks to its rosette-shaped mark on the top of the cap. It's a unisex hat.

The capeline hat

The woman's hat in essence. In the 14th century, its wide brims protected peasant women from the sun. From the 19th century onwards, it was transformed by varying shapes and colors, earning it a place of choice with the feminine genteel. It came in a variety of materials: wool, felt, straw, fabric or sisal.

In the last century, the capeline became a celebrity favorite and made tabloid headlines in the 70s. The floppy hat is the timeless feminine accessory that adapts to every trend, season and occasion...

When the 19th century revolutionized the hat...

So it wasn't until the 19th century that the hat really became feminine. Confined to an exclusively practical role for women, during this period it became a fashion accessory that enabled people to show off, beautify themselves and define their social status. This was well understood by milliners' workshops and the haute couture world, with the hat adapting to the Garconne hairstyle of the 20s in particular.

The 19th century was also that of the top hat, bowler hat, borsalino, Steston (cowboy hat) and the cap.

The Top Hat

Originating from the Netherlands, 15th-century bourgeois proudly sported this flat-brimmed, wide-brimmed headgear. Very fashionable in Europe, it would be abandoned in the 17th and 18th centuries before reappearing during the French Revolution. It then became a unisex hat, with women wearing it high on their hair. Its heyday came in the 19th century. Made of beaver, silk or felt, nearly 7 million were sold every year in France alone, and as many in Europe. Today, this article is worn primarily for ceremonies or in the entertainment world.

The bowler hat or "Derby"

Created in 1850 at the request of an English forest ranger (James Coke), many celebrities like Laurel and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin never parted with their bowler hat. Wearing a bowler hat in those days represented the height of modernity.

The borsalino hat

Giuseppe Borsalino trained at the prestigious Berteil millinery in Paris, where he earned the invaluable title of master chapelier. With his qualification in hand, he returned to Italy, where he went on to create the famous hat that would bear his name.

The Steston hat

Created by American John B. Stetson in 1860, this son of a hatter, stricken with tuberculosis when he was just 30, decided to set out to discover the American West before the disease took him. It was during this trip that he decided to create this cowboy hat, first known as the "Boss of the Plains". It quickly became the symbol of the Wild West.

The cap

In the early 19th century, it was representative of the working class. Quickly picked up by the armies of France, Europe and America, it was also found among many trades such as chauffeurs, porters, train conductors and security-related occupations...

It becomes popular in the world of sport, and invites itself to soccer, baseball, golf and cycling teams where it is usually worn backwards to protect the nape of the neck from the sun. Not forgetting, of course, the famous casquette béret, better known as the "Gavroche" or "Poulbot" cap, once worn by street urchins. Today, the cap is unisex and trendier than ever!

The hat after the 20th century...

The 20th century and its roaring twenties... It was during this period that the first cloche hats appeared, symbols of feminine elegance, which blended perfectly with short cuts. It is the opposite of the large, rather classic women's hats of the time. This garçonne trend is typical of the 1920s and the evolution of women's fashion.

The bob

It first appeared in 1924, in the United States. Bob is short for Robert, a nickname given to American soldiers who wore this hat during WW2 in France. Lately, brands representing urban fashion have totally revisited the bob to make it a trendy hat.

The Brixton collection

A brand created in 2004 by a Californian trio imbued with a blend of music, surf and skate culture. Above all, they wanted to shake up codes with unique products marked by a timeless style, combining classic and modern.

We offer a selection of hats suitable for all seasons, whatever the weather. The materials used are chosen according to temperatures and weather conditions. For example, straw, linen and cotton are ideal for the spring-summer season, while felt and wool are more suited to winter. In January, protect yourself from the cold with a winter hat made of felt and wool. In April, add a touch of style to your outfit with a Stetson signature cowboy hat.

In summer, temperatures are warmer, so it's time to choose a breathable, lightweight summer hat like a straw hat. The cotton bob hat is also practical for vacations, as this item can easily be stowed away in your suitcase. In September, go from a summer look to a more sophisticated one by wearing a fedora hat to accompany a classic black dress. Leather hats are also a good option for mid-season.

If you prefer caps and bonnets, we also offer them on our site. The cap can be worn in all seasons, while the bonnet is more suited to winter.
