It was regularly worn in films ranging from "Laurel and Hardy" to "Orange Mécanique", not forgetting Charlot, one of the best-known. And, of course, the TV series "Chapeau melon et botte de cuir". Nowadays, it's practically abandoned by men, and young girls are happy to wear it carelessly backwards. Melon hat trimmed in wool felt with grosgrain fabric available within 2/3 weeks. In the USA, this hat is known as a "Derby". But in England it's known as the Derby "chapeau melon". The Derby/chapeau melon is a rigid, dome-shaped hat with a small curved brim, traditionally made from stiff felt.
It was created by an Englishman, James Coke, in 1850. It was designed to protect the head. Peaking in popularity towards the end of the 19th century, it offered a middle path between the aristocratic classes and the casual nature of soft hats worn by the lower middle classes. It was usually worn with suits or overcoats and symbolized masculine dress. It was the traditional headwear of London gents and became a British cultural icon. However, British and American men stopped wearing hats in the 60s, and most young people in the 21st century have never seen a Derby hat/bowler hat worn as part of today's wardrobe.
