A hat steeped in history, handcrafted in Germany from 100% wool felt. This hat is a bircone, originally designed for equestrian purposes. It replaced the tricorne for convenience in the 1770s, and was later replaced by the top hat. Its origins are often associated with Napoleon 1st, but it originated a little earlier, during the revolutionary period.
Bicorne 1st Empire black wool felt - Traclet
It was not until the French Revolution that the army adopted this headgear, along with the cockade and yellow braid. In fact, the French infantry replaced the tricorne for this shape, which had the considerable advantage of facilitating the handling of the weapon. The hat is made of 100% wool felt and features a sewn-in ganse on the left side , secured by the black and red cocarde.
The appearance of the hat and the way it is worn vary according to time and fashion. However, it seems that soldiers generally wore them "en bataille ", i.e. across the chest, unlike officers, who wore them in column. The bicorne was discontinued in the army in 1806, and replaced by the shako or furry cap. Only staff, administration, generals, marshals and off-duty officers continued to wear it.
A magnificent bicorne handcrafted in Germany, using the codes and traditions of the period, for a real return to the past!
