Basque Cross Embroidery Beret - Traclet
Lauburu is the name given to the Basque cross, which was adopted in 1950. That's when it became a true Basque emblem!
In Basque, lauburu means "four heads". As you can probably guess, the term refers to the four commas of the cross.
Its origins are uncertain and its meanings diverse. Some theories suggest that the emblem was introduced by populations ofIndo-European origin in the Middle Ages. Others suggest a spontaneous appearance, spurred on by builders, clergy or central government.
The emergence of the Basque cross, and its original symbolism, predates the Christianization of the region. It thus dates from before the 15th century.
Whatever the case, it's generally agreed that this mythological symbol represents the four elements of creation:water, fire, earth and air.
An allegory of the cycle of life, referring to the rotation of the sun, sky and earth.
