Do you really know the history of the cap?

Derived from the military cap, the cap made its first steps in the 19th century. Symbol of the workers' struggle and the class of the same name, it was supported by the workers of course, but also by the sailors, the peasants and by many "service" jobs such as porters, drivers..

Made up of 8 panels, the cap could already be worn with costumes as well as sports clothes or school uniforms.

Timeless caps

The Cap gavroche

It takes its name from Victor Hugo's famous character in "Les misérables". Intimately linked to the revolt movements of the 19th century, or even to become one of its symbols, the Gavroche cap is also related to the Irish cap, while being more sought after and with more volume. An emblematic cap of the "Parisian titis" and newspaper delivery people in the United States (the newsboys). Easily recognizable thanks to its curved shape and small visor.

It is available in various colours and materials such as leather, felt, tweed or wool, and goes well with an urban or bohemian style.

Women, men and children alike wear this headgear, which has been able to renew itself and survive for decades. Once very popular, the Gavroche cap was recovered by haute-couture houses in the early 2000s to become a chic and trendy accessory.

The Irish cap

Known for being very strong and warm, the Irish cap is originally made from tweed and wool. But you can also find more comfortable leather or linen models under the summer sun. Tweed and wool were produced by hand in Ardara in Donegal County.

This traditional know-how has been passed down through the generations and we still find, even today, craftsmen who perpetuate the traditional production of the Irish cap. This cap with its curved visor was first and foremost used by Irish farmers. The sailors treated it with linseed oil to make it waterproof. Linseed oil has since been replaced by paraffin. A cap model with a timeless style, worn by men, women and children alike.

The Hatteras cap

An 8-sided cap very similar to the Irish cap. This cap, like many others, has a history... this head cover would have been made in front of North Carolina, more precisely on Hatteras Island, whose cape bears the same name. This place is located on the Atlantic coast of the United States. Sailors and islanders, in search of effective protection for their heads, would have used the rustic and warm Irish cap as a model to fight the storms on the island and cape. At the beginning of the 20th century, the inhabitants simply nicknamed it the Hatteras cap, after their island. Due to its use at sea, it differs from its Irish cousin in that it has a higher cap and a more curved visor. Very popular with workers and construction professionals in the 1930s, it remains today a flagship model of the Stetson brand. This wool cap has several variations: with a mixture of wool-acrylic, leather, cotton or even silk.

The flat cap

Very close to the Basque beret, it differs, however, by the addition of a visor. Its size and rigidity vary according to the models. Already present in the 19th century in the working and peasant world where it is made of wool, it is then declined by the British bourgeoisie as a more or less shimmering flannel. In the following century, it became an integral part of the American schoolchildren's uniforms and Sunday school uniforms. Today, it is mainly used for a retro unisex style.

The sailor cap or captain's cap

This cap, highlighted by colourful comic strip characters such as Captain Haddock (black cap with yellow band) or Corto Maltese (white cap and black visor), is largely inspired by the models used in the French Navy. A favourite headgear of sailors from Brittany and elsewhere, it enjoyed a dazzling boom in the 1960s thanks to celebrities such as John Lennon and Bob Dylan, who wore their caps during their concerts or trips.

The sea cap inspired one of our greatest writers:

"A sailor, in the wind, standing under the dungeon

Under the three gold stripes of his dark cap,

Dives off to sea with a clear and compelling look.

He has, crossing his arms, this rather harsh grace

Let the force at rest take in solitude. »

Anatole France

New Era - The Baseball Cap

The baseball cap is part of American DNA, as is the New Era brand. At the head of this company, an American family of German origin, the Koch, who have been making caps since the end of 1800, i. e. 4 generations that have succeeded each other to date.

It was in the 1930s, when cap sales were running out of steam, that they decided to focus on a model designed for baseball players. The aim is to provide the country's professional teams. They obtained a first deal with the Cleveland Indians team and then quickly reached their ultimate goal: to feed many major or minor American teams. In the public, fans also buy these baseball caps because they are proud to wear the colors of their respective teams. In the 1970s, the New Era brand was used in 20 franchises of the National Baseball League. One of the most famous is certainly that of the New York Yankees, with the 2 letters NY crossed one into the other. A logo that has become mythical all over the world. In the 80s and 90s baseball caps became a flagship accessory for hip-hop groups, sometimes accompanied by a headband. The cap has become a matter of course for Americans, regardless of their age or status

Urban trends: the snapback cap

A classic of the 90s. These caps, in one size but adjustable, take their name from their zipper: snapback means back snap button. Snapback is part of the sports world in the United States, it is present in MLB (baseball), NHL (hockey) and NBA (basketball) where the different teams have a distinct color and logo. Brands such as Mitchell and Ness or New Era create many models and collections each year for these sports teams that want to highlight their colours and values.

Snapback has evolved in recent years, it is no longer exclusively reserved for sports enthusiasts. It has opened up to the world of music, brands and characters from comic strips or films. It also has a claimant side and can carry very specific messages related to a news, a state of mind, or an emotion. The possibilities of composition are numerous, from classic velvet to cotton, suede or printed, there is something for every style and taste.
