From the Latin bicornis, a bicorne is simply a hat with two horns.
Derived from the three-horned hat, it was originally designed as equestrian headgear.
Worn in the military arena, the bicorne quickly established itself as the headgear of the 18th century. Made from wool felt, its appearance and the way it's worn have evolved over the years in line with fashion trends.
Today, the bicorne is still associated with the famous Napoleon hat under the Empire, but it can also be found at the Académie Française or at major events.
