Gendarme hat. The hat is a Bicorne. This bicorne was worn by the Gendarmerie in 1805. It's made of wool felt and is made in France.
From the tricorne hat to the bicorne, the Gendarmes remained faithful to the kepi for a long time. In 2004, however, the uniforms were redesigned to provide the Gendarmes with new, more practical uniforms. In this new uniform, a cap replaces the kepi, which is now only used for representation missions.
