History and Tradition: The Special Blue Beret of the ALAT Commandos

The blue beret, an emblematic symbol of the French Army, has a rich history and deep significance for those who have served under its folds. Among the various beret variations, the specific blue beret of the ALAT (Aviation Légère de l'Armée de Terre - Light Aviation of the Army) commandos is an object steeped in history and tradition, dating back to the tumultuous period of Indochina in the 1950s.

The history of the ALAT-specific blue beret finds its roots in July 1954, just a few months before the official creation of ALAT on November 22 of the same year. At that time, members of the Army's helicopter training groups in Indochina, called GFHATI, were looking for a distinctive headgear to reinforce their cohesion and identity. Commander Crespin, aware of the importance of symbols in military unity, proposed the adoption of an "RAF blue" colored beret to unify the headgear in service.

However, resources were limited and military administration was slow to react. As a result, Commander Crespin managed to recover a stock of blue berets abandoned by metropolitan paratroopers, and these berets were first distributed to GFHATI members in July 1954. This marked the beginning of the history of the ALAT-specific blue beret.

The blue beret of the ALAT commandos is distinguished by its characteristic color and distinctive tilt on the left side of the head. Unlike other military berets, it does not bear a rank insignia, thus reflecting the spirit of unity and equality within the ALAT commandos.

In 1957, a specific insignia in the shape of a winged five-pointed star was officially approved for ALAT. Fixed on the right side of the beret, at temple height, this insignia became a symbol of the commitment and professionalism of ALAT members.
