Retro and Vintage Hats

At Traclet, we like to revisit the fashion of the 19th and 20th century, at that time the headwear fashion was different from ours.

The main types of Retro Hats

In the streets of France in the 1800's we saw bowler hats with a completely round cap. This headgear had a second youth at the beginning of the XXth because it was worn by Charlie Chaplin in Les Temps Modernes and other silent films.

Often made of straw, the canoeist hat was worn in summer and very popular in places by the water, we find the canoeist on many paintings of the XIXth century which represent holiday scenes. This hat inspired the greatest French luxury houses, for example the famous Coco Chanel.

In the 20's, the big fashion among women was the bell hat, it was made of straw or felt and was worn both during the day and in the evening. The bell hat is another type of ultra feminine vintage hat, mainly worn during the Roaring Twenties. Placed on a cup known as a boy's hat, it symbolizes the emancipation of women after the First World War.

Men of good family started to wear the Fedora and the Italian Borsalino at the same time. These hats, usually black or brown, were often made of felt, which was rigid enough to keep the shape of the hat. On the contrary, the workers had adopted the gavroche cap or the flat cap, because the cap protected the skull and eyes without hindering the work.

The capelin, this hat with wide, soft edges, was already used in the Middle Ages by peasant women to protect themselves from the sun. It has been reinvented but its main function, which is to protect oneself from the sun, remains the same.

Nowadays more and more people are dressing in vintage style, for a look with an elegance of another time. Some hat shapes are bolder than others but there is always an opportunity to add a retro piece to the look. Furthermore, wearing a hat is no longer limited by a person's gender, nowadays if you are a woman and want to wear a gavroche, then go for it! Doors have opened in the world of fashion, enjoy retro hats whether you are a man or a woman. Vintage models are even coming back in mainstream fashion like the gavroche cap and the sailor's cap, which have been a hit in recent years!
