The hat in history - once a hat, always a hat..

If one was content with a few leaves to cover one's head in prehistoric times, the first hats appeared in Egypt in antiquity. Notably the bonnet, which differentiated between freed slaves and those who were not. The hats were rather worn by men, while women and children wore headdresses.

The beret is much older than one might think. Indeed, its name would be of Gallic origin (birrus), but its shape has evolved over time. This woollen toque became a speciality of Béarn, a national emblem, which was elegantly worn by civilians and soldiers alike. Caricatures attempting to diminish the appeal of this headgear have not succeeded in eliminating it from the visuals. It remains a real asset of charm which marries marvelously with a great majority of clothing

The chapka, this hat which comes from the polar cold of Russia, (chapka means hat in Russian), would in fact originate from Mongolia. It would have been imported into Siberia during the invasions in the Middle Ages. Symbol of power in Russia, a chapka is traditionally offered to leaders when they take power. Once made exclusively of natural furs, they are nowadays also offered in synthetic fur. This unisex hat has been very fashionable since the early 2000s.

In the 13th century, the felt hat, essentially masculine, makes its appearance. As for women, they wore cotton or linen caps or headdresses. Toques will gradually disappear in favour of the chaperone

Straw hats

The straw hat is made from 14nd century, its shape varies according to the times. Usually decorated with a ribbon, its size and weaving differentiates it according to its country of origin.

The boater

Very summery, this straw hat appeared in 1880. Its popularity is such that this hat, initially worn by male canoeists or sportsmen, became popular among women who practice hunting and horseback riding. Music-hall celebrities made it their favourite accessory. Even the great Coco Chanel succumbed to the charm of the canoeist. A star of the banks of the Seine and of the "guinguettes", it will be found on many paintings, the most illustrious of which is "Le déjeuner des canotiers" by Auguste Renoir.


Originally from Ecuador, it was the workers in charge of the construction of the Panama Canal who popularized it in Europe and the United States upon their return from their mission. The real Panama hat smells like straw and is easily recognizable thanks to its rosette-shaped mark on the top of the cap. It is a unisex hat.

The floppy hat

The essence of a woman's hat. On the 14thth century, its wide edges protected peasant women from the sun. The top hat

Originally from the Netherlands, the bourgeois of the 15ème century proudly wear this flat-brimmed, wide brimmed headgear. Very fashionable in Europe, it will be abandoned in the 17th centuryth and 18th it was first used in the 19th century before reappearing during the French Revolution. It then became a unisex hat, and women wore it high up on their hair. Its heyday was in the 19thth century. In beaver, silk or felt, nearly 7 million of them were sold every year in France alone, and as many in Europe. Today, it is mainly worn for ceremonies and shows.

The bowler hat or "Derby"

Created in 1850 at the request of an English forest ranger (James Coke), many celebrities like Laurel and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin never part with their bowler hats. It represented, at that time, the pinnacle of modernity.

The borsalino

Giuseppe Borsalino trained at the prestigious Berteil hat shop in Paris where he obtained the precious title of master hatter. With his qualification in hand, he returned to Italy where he created the famous hat that would bear his name.

The Steston

Created by the American John B. Stetson in 1860, this hatmaker's son suffered from tuberculosis when he was just 30 years old and decided to set out to discover the American West before the disease took him. It was during this trip that he decided to create this cowboy hat, first known as the "Boss of the Plains". It quickly became the symbol of the Wild West.

The cap

At the beginning of the 19thème century, it is representative of the working class. Rapidly recovered by the armies of France, Europe and America, it is also found in many trades such as drivers, porters, train conductors and security-related professions..

It is becoming popular in the world of sports, and is used on football, baseball, golf and cycling teams, where it is usually worn upside down to protect the neck from the sun.
