The Felt hat woman and man

The origin of felt is very old, it would go back to prehistory. As early as antiquity, the Greek petase, a round felt hat, was a very common headgear. Later, Mongolian nomads already used felt to make their yurts, but also their clothes, shoes, and of course their hats. It was highly appreciated for its insulating and waterproof qualities. The manufacture, although mechanized today, has remained more or less the same since the 14th centuryth century. It was at this same time that the profession of hatter was officially recognised.

Felt is made from non-woven vegetable (sheep or goat wool) or animal (rabbit, lamb, beaver) fibres.

What are the different stages in the manufacture of a felt hat?

First of all, clean the wool and then mix it at a high temperature. The wool is then carded, i.e. combed, to obtain a veil which is then wrapped around a double cone to obtain two bells which will be felted, sprayed and compressed to solidify the raw material. The two bells must be of similar thickness before being felted again. Dyeing precedes the felting process, which stretches the felt to its final size. After sanding with sandpaper to remove all the roughness, the work of pampering, i.e. shaping, can begin

How do you care for your felt hat?

If you do not wear your hat daily, it is best to keep it in a closed box to protect it from dust and unfortunate incidents (such as heavy objects being placed on your hat). It is advisable to store it upside down on the cap in order to avoid deformations

To clean your hat, it is preferable to use a brush (hat or clothes), taking care to rub in a counter-clockwise direction so as not to damage the fibres. You can also use a damp sponge and rub gently

Waterproofing your felt hat will allow you to keep it longer
