National Defense Medals with Gendarmerie clasp. HISTORY: Of recent creation (decree of 04/21/1982), this decoration was created by Charles Hernu (Minister of Defense). He thus took up the idea of General de Boissieu (Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor - former Chief of Staff of the Army), concerned with rewarding soldiers performing national service as well as active-duty military personnel. This medal allows for reducing the waiting time for obtaining one of the national orders or the Military Medal.
