National Defense medals with Gendarmerie clasp. HISTORY: A recent creation (decree of 21/04/1982), this decoration was created by Charles Hernu (Minister of Defense). He took up the idea of General de Boissieu (Grand Chancelier de la Légion d'Honneur - former Chief of Staff of the French Army), who wanted to reward military personnel performing national service as well as those on active duty. This medal cuts the time it takes to obtain one of the national orders or the Military Medal.
