Indian headdress
Eagle feather headdresses are the most prized of North American ornaments. So popular, in fact, that in the United States, only Native Americans are allowed to own eagle feathers, as they are considered essential to the preservation of their culture, even though eagles are a strictly protected species.
These ornaments can be as simple as a single feather, or as complex as the Sioux or Arapaho. They were used in war as well as in religious councils and ceremonies in the Far West.
It would appear that the first North Americans to use complex ornaments were the Crows. The Blackfoot adopted them at the beginning of the 19th century, but their eagle feathers are raised circularly and vertically in a row around the head. The Pawnee chief Petalesharo wore one in 1821, the Cheyenne around 1830 at least, and the Sioux in the mid-19th century, not forgetting the Ituha.
These headdresses are still used at Pow Wows. Some traditional headdresses also feature buffalo horns. From the 1920s onwards, George Catlin, an "Indian" portraitist, was an important source of information on traditional North American Indian dress.
