Contrary to popular belief, this model is not called a sailor's beret but a sailor's cap, or Bachi in the French navy. The bachi is the name given to the headwear that is worn by sailors from seaman to petty officer. From the rank of second master upwards, they wear a peaked cap.
In the French Navy, the cap is topped with a red pompom. Normally, it has a chin strap to hold it in place in windy conditions, but this model does not have one. Popular belief suggests that the pompom serves to cushion shocks, but this is not the case as it is not adopted by all other sailor caps in other navies.
