Coober Pedy is the world's largest opal mine.
This stone gives it its name, hence the name Coober Pedy. Hat made of "imperial quality" rabbit fur felt with three eyelets on each side to ventilate the head, featuring a beautiful band enhanced with a genuine Australian opal mounted on a patterned kangaroo leather trim.

This leather is purchased under Australian control authorities with the rates in force in the country. As such, each is different in color and texture. This is a unique feature of the kangaroo trim. Each band stands out in shade and texture and is paired with an Australian opal directly from the Coober Pedy Mines in South Australia. This thus gives a unique hat. The Coober Pedy hat by Akubra is a very popular fur felt hat for both city and outback. Its brims are tilted down at the front and back for protection against the sun as well as rain.
The pre-creased crown is 4 inches high at the front, 4-1/2 inches on the sides, its eyelets are fully lined. The rabbit felt is pure rabbit fur; the Akubra quality type is: Imperial Akubra.

A bit of history about Coober Pedy
Coober Pedy comes from the indigenous name piti kupu, which means "white Burrow Fellows".
The famous opal fields in South Australia were so named by the local Indigenous people because miners dug tunnels not only to extract opal, but to live in as well. 70% of Coober Pedy's inhabitants still live underground to escape the stifling heat and sun of this desert region.
The Coober Pedy hat doesn't quite provide the coolness and shade of a burrow, but it's the next best thing when you need to go out in the sun or rain. Think of it as your own portable burrow!
