Bigouden hat in wool felt with matching velvet ribbon.
Bigouden hat in wool felt with round cap and velvet ribbon.
Bigouden, Breton word for a small canvas appendage at the top of the Pont-L'Abbé (Finistère) headdress. By extension, it became the name of the headdress worn by women in this region of Brittany.
The Bigouden three-ribbon hat (Tok teier voulouzenn) has a round cap, narrow brim and rigid bottom. The hat is trimmed in velvet (bordou voulous) with three black velvet guides (or ribbons, voulouzennoù) held by three buckles (not supplied) (boukl), leaving six floating panels on the back of the cap.
Once worn, this hat could be "refurbished" by having the velvet trim redone and the three guides replaced.
Sometimes, too, it was kept without being refurbished, so that it could be used every day at work, without remorse.
