Mortarboard, n.m.: What is this breadboard on the heads of American students? Called "Mortarboard" or "Oxford Cap", this symbol of academic success was originally an Italian Renaissance hat, close to the biretta worn by the clergy (hence the second part of its name; the prefix "mortar" - mortar coming from the similarity of the object with the container used by the mortar at the time).
Used in France before becoming an essentially Anglo-Saxon symbol, the mortarboard is an essential ingredient of "graduation ceremonies": graduation ceremonies at Harvard, Oxford and also... Cambridge.
But who still cares about such symbols in France? VICTORIA'S of course since we have put this hat in the spotlight over the lion that is part of our logo
