Mortarboard, n.m: What's this breadboard doing on American students' heads? Called "Mortarboard" or "Oxford Cap", this symbol of academic success was originally an Italian Renaissance hat, similar to the biretta worn by clergy (hence the second part of its name; the prefix "mortar" coming from the object's similarity to the container used for mortar at the time).
Used in France before becoming an essentially Anglo-Saxon symbol, the mortarboard is an essential ingredient of "graduation ceremonies": diploma award ceremonies at Harvard, Oxford and also ... Cambridge.

About the graduation cap
Graduation cap for men and women in the original Anglo-Saxon model form. The material is black fabric with an original semi-light pendant in a long satin tassel with fittings, the graduation year. The inside is attached by a small elastic.
Made to order
This is the classic Anglo-Saxon graduate cap. At Oxford, it has already been used and the tag in the 19th century was traditionally black or yellow gold. Today, it is possible to have the tag in the color of your faculty: Here are some examples:
