Niçois straw hat
The Niçois hat and the capeline are both chef's hats with very wide brims.
This makes them the perfect accessory for sun protection and adds a romantic touch to any outfit.
The capeline has one difference from the Niçois hat: it's very flat, made of straw and, above all, without a skullcap.
The capeline can be made of straw, leather or fabric... a material that's often supple, making its edges ripple. Another difference: the Nice hat has a ribbon tied under the chin to keep it on the head.
The hat has been part of traditional costume in Nice since at least the 18th century. Attributed to the costume of the bouquetière niçoise, it is often embellished with flowers.
A very popular headdress, initially made from Piedmont rice straw and braided with fine hemp yarn. Later, natural rice straw from China was used.
The women of Nice turn their hats to follow the path of the sun. When the sun is no longer shining, they drop their hats down their backs or hang them on their loins.
