National Defense Medals with Gendarmerie clasp. HISTORY: Of recent creation (decree of 21/04/1982), this decoration was created by Charles Hernu (Minister of Defense). He thus took up the idea of General de Boissieu (Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor - former Chief of Staff of the Army), concerned with rewarding servicemen performing national service as well as active service military personnel.
