Contrary to popular belief, it's not called a sailor's beret but a sailor's cap, or Bachi in the French navy. The bachi is the name given to the headgear that is worn from sailor to petty officer. From the rank of chief petty officer, they wear a peaked cap. In the French national navy, the cap is topped with a red pompom. Normally, it has a chin strap to hold it in place in case of wind, this model has one but it's fixed. Popular belief suggests that the pompom was meant to cushion shocks, but this is not the case as it is not adopted for all other sailor caps in other navies.
