A bit of history about the Pakol hat
The pakol is an Afghan wool hat; these hats being handcrafted, they can be made from sheep's wool but also possibly with goat or camel hair. The interior is often lined with a cotton cap to prevent the wool from scratching the scalp. The shape of the pakol can be adjusted by rolling the border more or less tightly.
The pakol is the most popular hat among men in northern Afghanistan.
It originally comes from the Afghan-Pakistani border area towards Nuristan and northern Pakistan: Chitral.
An ethnic Pashtun hat that was popularized among the Tajiks by the Northern Alliance and its leader Ahmad Shah Massoud.
This hat is believed to be a legacy from the passage of Alexander the Great; he was the first Greek king to wear the kausia, a hat with a similar shape.
This hat appears on coins, statues, paintings and mosaics from that era.
About the Grey Wool Pakol
- Size: approximately 56/58 cm
- The diameter of the pakol can vary for two reasons: it is not an industrial product; by adding pieces of fabric, thin strips, the size of the border roll is increased.
