Those Irish caps made famous by the famous BBC series. A series telling the story of a family of criminals known as the "Peaky Blinders". Through robbery, gang warfare and territory, we are transported to this dark 19th century world in the middle of Birmingham.

But where does this strange name "Peaky Blinders" come from? Roughly translated in French, it would mean "Peaky Blinders". This peaked cap, which was an integral part of their thugs' outfits, was nicknamed "peaky", hence the name of this group. As far as the other side is concerned, according to some sources it would be:

  • either because these criminals hid their weapons in the visor of this cap...
  • or that their method of robbing their victims was to punch them in the nose, using the cap, in order to blind them while they stole a good number of their belongings...

The Irish cap

This flat cap is traditionally made in Ireland. It is made of wool or tweed to keep warm and protect from the cold. Originally, this cap is referred to as a flat cap, it is made up of 8 sides but may also be made up of 6 sides. In the history of the Irish cap, it was worn by Irish and British peasants mainly in the countryside, this headgear was a real ally during the coldest periods. Its history

The flat cap was created in the 14th century. It was basically considered as a cap and was mostly worn in the countryside. Its first use was not to give style to an outfit but more precisely to bring comfort and warmth to workers in the countryside, during the long winter days spent outdoors

Laws dating back to the 16th century even relate the importance of the wearing of the flat cap in England. Thus, it had become compulsory for children over 6 years old and men to wear the cap on Sundays and holidays, under penalty of a fine. This astonishing law was primarily intended to revive the wool trade, particularly in countries in economic difficulty. It was however cancelled in 1597

Despite this, the wearing of this flat cap did not stop, it became an indispensable accessory, an integral part of Irish and British culture

A popular cap

Quickly appreciated, the Irish cap became popular and was worn all over the world. Notably thanks to the immigration of British and Irish workers to the United States to live the American dream. It was towards the end of the 19th century that it really became popular in the West and was adopted by both men and young boys. Despite an image of headgear this rather popular law was cap it also appeals to a higher social class who wears it for sports and leisure activities.
