Niçois straw hat
The Niçois hat and the capeline are both headwear with very wide brims.
This makes them perfect accessories for sun protection and adds a romantic touch to any outfit.
The capeline differs from the Niçois hat in that it is very flat, made of straw, and notably without a crown.
The capeline can be made of straw, leather, fabric ... often a flexible material that makes its brim undulate. Another difference; the Niçois hat is crossed by a ribbon tied under the chin to keep it on the head.
This hat has been part of the traditional Nice costume since at least the 18th century. Associated with the costume of the Nice flower seller, it is often adorned with flowers.
A very popular headwear initially made from Piedmont rice straw and braided with very fine hemp thread. Later, natural rice straw from China was used.
Women from Nice turn their hat following the course of the sun. When there is no more sun, they let their hat fall on their back or hang it on their lower back.
