Contrary to popular belief, it's not called a sailor's beret but sailor's cap, or Bachi in the French navy. The bachi is the name given to the headwear that is worn from sailor to petty officer. From the rank of second master, they wear a peaked cap. In the French national navy, the cap is topped with a red pompom. Normally, it has a chin strap to hold it in place in windy conditions, this model has one but it's fixed. Popular belief suggests that the pompom was meant to absorb shocks, but this isn't the case since it's not adopted for all other sailor caps in other navies.
