A headwear steeped in history, handcrafted from 100% wool felt in Germany. This hat is a bicorn, which was originally designed for equestrian purposes. It's the hat style that replaced the tricorn for practical reasons in the 1770s; and would itself be replaced later by the top hat. Its origin is often associated with Napoleon I but it originated slightly earlier during the revolutionary period.
First Empire Black Wool Felt Bicorn - Traclet
It was from the French Revolution that the army adopted this headwear, with the cockade and yellow braid. Indeed, the French infantry substituted the tricorn for this shape which had the considerable advantage of facilitating weapon handling. The hat is made from 100% wool felt and features on its left side a sewn braid fastened by the cockade in red and black colors.
The appearance of the hat and how it was worn varied according to the times and fashion. However, it seems that soldiers generally wore it "in battle", meaning sideways, unlike officers who wore it in column style. The bicorn was abandoned by the army in 1806 and replaced by the shako or bearskin cap. Only the general staff, administration, generals, marshals, and off-duty officers continued to wear it.
A magnificent bicorn handcrafted in Germany, which incorporates the codes and traditions of the era, for a genuine journey back in time!
