Basque Cross Embroidered Beret - Traclet
Lauburu is the identity name of the Basque cross, which it acquired in 1950. This is when it became a true Basque emblem!
In the Basque language, lauburu means "four heads". As you might guess: the term refers to the four comma-like shapes of the cross.
Its origins are uncertain and its meanings diverse. Some theories suggest the emblem was introduced by populations of Indo-European origin during the Middle Ages. Others suggest the possibility of a spontaneous appearance, driven by builders, clergy, or central power.
The emergence of the Basque cross, and its original symbolism, predates the Christianization of the region. It thus dates back to before the 15th century.
In any case, it is agreed that this mythological symbol represents the four elements of creation, namely water, fire, earth and air.
An allegory of the cycle of life, referring to the rotation of the sun, sky and earth.
