In the second half of the late 19th century and early 20th century, the boater became the quintessential summer hat for men. Women eventually adopted it after 1950... Currently, many children wear boater hats for ceremonies.

The scene from Renoir's famous painting "Luncheon of the Boating Party" featured this headwear. The way to wear the boater hat was codified, and fashion dictated that it should be worn slightly tilted forward and angled over the ear.
