In the second half of the late 19th century and early 20th century, the boater became the quintessential men's summer hat. Women eventually adopted it after 1950... Today, many children wear the boater at ceremonies. The scene from Renoir's famous painting "Le déjeuner des canotiers" featured this headwear. The way of wearing the boater was codified, with fashion dictating that it be worn slightly tilted forward and angled over the ear.
