The Akubra Legend
In 1870, immigrant B. Dunkerley founded a hat factory. He then invented the machine for processing rabbit skins. The concept? Isolate the down necessary for making felt. In 1918, the company expanded into larger premises and increased production. It was then that the now famous Akubra brand was born. The company then won important contracts with the government, notably to equip soldiers for the two world wars.
Akubra respects the traditional values that make it successful, but also uses modern and sophisticated techniques. Akubra is one of the few hatmakers to master the entire manufacturing process of a felt hat: from rabbit skin to finished product. All done by its own craftsmen. The brand has always remained at the forefront of fashion, and Akubra has become the generic term for an Australian felt hat.
