In 1870, immigrant B. Dunkerley founded a hat factory. He then invented the rabbit skin processing machine. The concept? To isolate the down necessary for making felt. In 1918, the company expanded to larger premises and increased production. It was then that the now famous Akubra brand was born. The company then won significant contracts with the government, notably to equip soldiers for both world wars.
Akubra respects the traditional values that have made it successful, but also uses modern and sophisticated techniques. Akubra is one of the few hatmakers to master the entire production chain of a felt hat: from rabbit skin to finished product. All of this is done by its own artisans. The brand has always remained at the forefront of fashion, and Akubra has become the generic term for an Australian felt hat.
For over a century, Akubra has been adorning the heads of leaders and celebrities. Appreciated and recognized worldwide, Akubra is proud to maintain its great tradition of quality and promote its unique Australian style.
