Unlike the Basque beret, the Alpine hunters' beret is wider to provide better protection against weather conditions such as snow or rain, and also, for those who fear it, from the sun. It is for all these reasons that the Alpine hunter units officially adopted it in 1891, a decision coming directly from the Ministry of War at the time. This beret would quickly become their emblem, which, for practical purposes, allows them, thanks to its warm wool and wider size, to protect their feet during their mountain guard duties. This Alpine hunter beret, also called 'tarte' (pie), is made in the Basque Country from 100% wool.
