About the Salt Worker's Hat

Its history originates from Guérande
The salt worker wore four successive vests: two in white cloth, a third in blue cloth enhanced with green bands, and a fourth, shorter, red one. Flowing white cotton or local basin trousers, tightened at the knees with white stockings or gaiters, completed the costume. The wide-brimmed hat, adorned with ribbons, was worn differently depending on whether the man was married, single, or widowed: turned up on the side for young men and in front for married men. During ceremonies, the man wore a mid-length black coat.
The woman wore a rigid plastron embroidered with gold and silver, covering the chest, with designs varying according to the parishes. The bodice included a round-necked vest adorned with a starched lace collar, with wide red sleeves ending at the wrist with lace or embroidery.
The blue corset, fastened in front with ribbons falling to the side, was cut in a square shape at the back. As for the dress, it consisted of two white petticoats covered by a skirt, all three of different lengths. Finally, a moiré apron, tied at the back, with a belt and ribbons matching the plastron's motifs.
The headdress is similar to that of the Vannes region, finely embroidered, matching the collar which is also crafted with pleated skirt and truly unique plastron.
The bride's costume included a bishop purple skirt, red sleeves embroidered with black velvet that were turned up to show the beautiful gold and yellow brocade lining.
