English Bowler Hat
It has been regularly worn in cinema from "Laurel and Hardy" to "A Clockwork Orange" not forgetting Charlie Chaplin who is one of the most famous. And of course the TV series "The Avengers". Today, practically abandoned by men, it delights young girls who don't hesitate to wear it carelessly pushed back.
In the United States, this hat is known as the "Derby". But in England it is known as the "bowler hat". The Derby/bowler hat is a rigid dome-shaped hat with a small curved brim and is traditionally made of stiff felt. It was created by an Englishman, James Coke in 1850. It was designed to protect the head. Reaching peak popularity towards the end of the 19th century, it offered a middle ground between the aristocratic classes and the casual nature of soft hats worn by the petite bourgeoisie. It was usually worn with suits or overcoats and symbolized masculine attire. It was the traditional headwear of London gentlemen and became a British cultural icon. However, British and American men stopped wearing hats in the 1960s, and most young people in the 21st century have never seen a Derby/bowler hat worn as part of current wardrobe.
