English Bowler Hat
It has been regularly worn in movies from "Laurel and Hardy" to "Clockwork Orange" without forgetting Charlot who is one of the best known. And of course the TV series " Chapeau melon et botte de cuir ". Today, almost abandoned by men, it is the happiness of young girls who do not hesitate to wear it carelessly in the back.
In the United States, this hat is known as "Derby". In England it is known as the Derby "bowler hat". The Derby/bonnet hat is a rigid dome-shaped hat with a small curved brim and is traditionally made of stiff felt. It was created by an Englishman, James Coke in 1850. It was designed to protect the head. Making a spike in popularity towards the end of the 19th century, it offered a middle path between the aristocratic classes and the casual nature of the soft hats worn by the petty bourgeoisie. It was usually worn with suits or overcoats and symbolized masculine dress. It was the traditional headwear of London gents and became a British cultural icon. However British and American men stopped wearing hats in the 1960s, and most young people in the 21st century have never seen a Derby hat/bowler worn as part of the current wardrobe.
