Forty years ago, on a beautiful windy day, on a lovely boat called the Karmananda, a clever thought popped into Alex Tilley's head. And this clever thought had everything to do with what was on Alex Tilley's head: a sailing hat that simply wasn't cutting it. Back on land, Alex set to work creating that first hat: ready for all weather and adventures, durable and brimming with easy style. Alex emerged with what would become the iconic Tilley - the hat that started it all. Today, the Tilley factory honors what has proven itself. It takes 23 pairs of hands to make a Tilley hat, a precise and practiced process that we're proud to uphold.
