A Chinese hat is a wide-brimmed conical hat often made from dried plants and used by farmers in the Far East and Southeast Asia. Currently, it is also made from rush, finished straw, or bamboo. It provides protection from the sun and rain during fieldwork.
It's probably called a Chinese hat because it was first seen by Westerners in China. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that it originated there.
