Beanie - How to choose the right one?

The choice of buying a beanie may seem simple, but you still need to know how to choose the right model and wear it well. Whether you're a man or a woman, here are some tips to choose the beanie that will suit you, so that it doesn't stay at the bottom of the closet!

During winter, the famous warm jacket, beanie, and gloves kit is therefore a must. While we sometimes think it's difficult to dress with class in winter, it's not the case. For this, learn to choose your beanie carefully. Contrary to what one might think, it is indeed important to choose the right model if you want to flatter your outfit. The beanie is often one of the first things noticed.

First, a quick reminder of the evolution of the beanie over time. It should be known that the beanie is the oldest known form of headwear. Indeed, traces of it are found in Antiquity, with the famous pilos. These were then worn by former slaves, as a sign of emancipation. The beanie subsequently evolved and became popular. From the 11th century, the beanie appeared as a sign of distinction for the wealthy classes, to finally become gradually a headwear worn by all.

For years, beanies were worn for protection during winter sports, as well as for protection from the freezing cold in cities. They had no particular aesthetic pretension at the time. There were large wool models that mainly served to keep warm. Nowadays, it has become a fashion accessory, like a cap or a hat, and it comes in various materials and styles. We even start to find them in summer in lighter materials. It is then worn to refine a casual or urban style. It nonetheless remains an accessory directly associated with winter and extreme cold.

So how to choose it? Here are some tips.

Choose your style

Casual, rock, glamorous or retro: there's a beanie for every style! To wear a beanie that reflects your image, that matches your tastes and reflects your personality, don't buy the first beanie you find. Choosing a model because it's fashionable isn't a good idea either. Trends come and go, they are ephemeral: it's better to opt for a model that will be a safe bet and that you won't tire of. The important thing is that you like the beanie, before pleasing others!

Match the beanie to your outfit

To avoid looking mismatched, you need to dare to play with colors and materials. You can, for example, echo a color: a beanie in the same tone as your shoes or a scarf. We often find beanie/scarf sets to have a harmonious ensemble! Think of neutral colors that associate easily. The illustration below is a good example: the ensemble is navy blue which can be associated with many colors and create a color echo, especially with the scarf.

Avoid the total look

Matching your clothes doesn't mean wearing a beanie, jacket, and shoes of the same color. The same goes for patterns. These should be handled with caution to avoid overloading the ensemble and not getting lost in an outfit that hides you more than it enhances you. As explained above, color echoes are generally the most attractive. A colorful or patterned beanie can thus liven up a rather sober outfit and vice versa.

Dare to be original

It is entirely possible to be original without falling into bad taste. If you don't want to wear a classic shape, try the Peruvian beanie. It comes in different colors, materials, and patterns, for a head covering that stands out. To avoid overdoing it, however, avoid wearing a poncho and fringed boots. If you feel like it, don't hesitate to opt for flashy beanies: a touch of color won't hurt to warm up a gloomy winter! In any case, it's up to you to wear the beanie you like, without relying on trends or others' preferences.

Enhance your face with a suitable beanie

Like hats, beanies come in different shapes and models that suit some face morphologies more or less. When you want to equip yourself for the winter season for a trendy and warm look, it is therefore important to choose a beanie adapted to the shape of your face by respecting a few essential rules. You can thus guide your choice with ease for a purchase that meets all your expectations:

  • You have a square face if your cheekbones are pronounced and your forehead and chin are the same size. In this case, the shape of your beanie should help elongate your face with oversized or wide models rather than tight-fitting ones.
  • If you have a round face, a pointed beanie helps elongate your face with rather geometric lines. Beanies to be worn at the back should be avoided.
  • You have a heart-shaped face if your forehead is wide, your cheekbones are pronounced, and your chin is pointed. A voluminous beanie then helps balance your morphology for an ideal look, with large knits or pom-poms for example.
  • If you have an oval and thin face, most beanies can suit your morphology. So don't hesitate to try various models to find the one that will best represent your personality.

Dare to express a style that reflects you

While pom-pom and cuffed beanies have been among the most worn models in recent years, you can choose an original or unconventional beanie to accompany your winter outfits. Your fashion accessory is then an opportunity to stand out with style by opting for an oversized beanie to wear at the back, or a ushanka that will ensure ideal comfort during cold periods. Whether it's the shape, a glittery beanie or one with a bow, you'll quickly find the model adapted to your morphology and personality at Chapellerie Traclet!
